Description
The first
blueberries were commercially cultivated from wild stock in New Jersey
in 1920. The cultivated berries thrived in the acidic boggy soils of
the area, which up until this point, were considered unsuitable for
farming. Today, most commercially cultivated blueberries are grown in
North America, with some cultivation in Western Europe and New Zealand.
In
the past, the names "blueberry" and "bilberry" were both used, however
now the name "blueberry" is used for the cultivated fruits. Cultivated
blueberries are hybrids of three native American species, the highbush
V corymbosum, the V ashei and the lowbush V angustifolia. The
cultivated varieties are very different than their wild cousins. They
may be four times as large with a pleasing combination of acidity and
sweetness. Wild blueberries are small in size and are not as sweet.
Wild Blueberries can be found wherever acidic soil and plentiful water
exist.
At
Stash Tea we blend the whole blueberry fruit, natural blueberry flavor
extracts and premium quality Chinese and Indian black teas. The result
is a smooth, rich tea with the fruity aroma and pleasing flavor of
blueberries. This tea may be enjoyed any time of the day but is
especially good as a dessert drink with a little sugar added.
